Report from Harford Plein Air Competition

I was one of thirty artists to be accepted into Harford Plein Air Competition, MD. We were gathered for a week of outdoor painting. This was my first Plein Air event and I hope there will be more in the future. I started to paint in early morning every day, and returned to my hostess eight hours later. Wednesday happened to be my best day. I started to set up my gear at a nearby church where I had a nice view of a farm across the road. It was around 7:30 am and heavy fog. The sun was slowly climbing over the horizon and I could soon see the silhouette of the barn. As I started to paint, I realized that the mist had made my paper soaking wet and therefore it was difficult to paint. I finally had to start my car and use the A/C to dry the soaking wet paper. It worked. After an hour I was happy to finish my first painting for the day.

After the morning painting shift I decided to visit another farm. One is a horse farm and the other is a poultry farm. I choose to drive to the poultry farm. I had directions to follow, but I never found them. After trying to find the poultry farm, I got lost. I was way out in the sticks. Somewhat disappointed I followed a narrow winding road, and all of a sudden I saw the most beautiful barn, It was white and majestic! I decided to stop and check with the owners if I could paint on their property? The answer was yes, I was welcome to paint. The sun was up and it created amazing shadows from the barn.  I spent a couple of hours at the farm, two children showed up. They were curious what I was doing. They loved to talk about their Lego, Star Wars spaceships and dolls while I was finishing my painting. I had a really great time, the kids were adorable and the painting turned out to be great! You never know what you find when you get lost.

After lunch and some rest I decided to drive to Havre de Grace with a fellow artist and to take a look at the harbor. We stopped at  one of the marinas, where some boats were in the water and some were stored for the winter. I saw two sailing boats in the distance and these boats created beautiful reflections in the water. It was time for my third painting for the day. A very productive day.

You are welcome to take a closer look at my finished paintings on my website.

Thanks for checking in.

Lena
